Vincent Browne
Broadcaster, Journalist, MC and After Dinner Speaker

Vincent Browne was born in Limerick and reared in a small west Limerick village, Broadford. He went to the local schools there and later to Castleknock College and UCD, where he did a degree in economics and politics. Later on, in 1997 he was called to the Bar.

He started in journalism in 1967, first with RTE and then, in the summer of 1968 covered for The Irish Times the Soviet army invasion of Czechoslovakia (as it was then). He then edited a monthly current affairs magazine, Nusight, before being appointed northern editor of The Irish Press Group of Newspapers in 1970.

He was in Belfast during the early and worst years of the troubles. He joined Independent Newspapers in 1974 and started Magill magazine in 1977. He was involved, with Tony Ryan of GPA and later Ryan Air, in the relaunch of The Sunday Tribune in 1983 and was editor of that until 1994.

Since then he has been a columnist with The Irish Times and The Sunday Business Post and a broadcaster with RTE. He relaunched Magill in 1997, sold it on in 1998. Launch Village magazine in October of last year and is now editor and publisher of that as well as writing for the Irish Times and The Sunday Business Post and broadcasting with RTE.

He is a regular speaker at dinners, seminars, conference and festivals. Recently he opened Eigse, the poetry festival in west Limerick in memory of the poet Michael Hartnett. Previously he opened Listowel Writers Week, spoken at Rotary Club functions, summer schools, and book launches. His topics have ranged from politics, to poetry, to music, journalism, the media generally, sport and the way we live. He also hosts panel discussions and acted as MC at various functions and events. He has spoken to audiences of prisoners on several occasions.

Among his interviewees have been every Taoiseach since and including Sean Lemass (bar Liam Cosgrave). He regularly persecuted Haughey while Taoiseach about the sources of his wealth. He has repeatedly confronted Sinn/IRA figures about atrocities perpetrated by the IRA over the period of the conflict, including Gerry Adams, Martin Ferris and Pat Doherty. He has questioned Bertie Ahern about the revelations of the Tribunals and done thousands of other interviews with a range of personalities from opera singers, to poets, literary figures and comics.
