Monty Halls
Writer, Explorer, Presenter and Public Speaker
Monty Halls is a writer, explorer, television presenter and public speaker. A former Royal Marines officer who worked for Nelson Mandela on the peace process in South Africa, he left the services in 1996 to pursue a career in leading expeditions. Following a first class honours degree in marine biology, Monty has circumnavigated the globe four times on various projects, leading multi-national teams in some of the most demanding environments on earth. Notable expeditions included an anti-poaching project in northern Malawi, the discovery of a sunken city off the coast of India, and a successful attempt to find and photograph a rare crocodile species in the mountain pools of the Raspaculo Basin in Central America. In 2002, he was awarded the Bish Medal by the Scientific Exploration Society for his services to exploration.
Monty’s television career began when he won Channel 4’s Superhuman competition in 2003, during which ten high performing individuals from all walks of life in the UK were tested by experts. This led swiftly to more work with Channel Four, and in turn various adventure and science-related programmes for National Geographic, the History Channel, Animal Planet, Channel Five, and most recently Monty Halls Great Escape, the acclaimed series for BBC2.
Monty has written four books, the latest of which followed his time as a crofter of questionable competence on the west coast of Scotland during the filming of the BBC series.
He is in great demand as a public speaker, addressing conferences, seminars, and events both nationally and internationally.
Monty is patron to the Shark Trust, The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, Help for Heroes, and is an Honorary Ambassador to the Galapagos Conservation Trust.
His passions are writing, filming and photographing the underwater world, lecturing on team dynamics and leadership, and – despite overwhelming evidence that his best days are behind him - playing rugby. In the latter, he displays the acceleration of a sedated heifer, and the turning circle of a cross-channel ferry.
