Maxi
National Broadcaster, producer and presenter, Actor and journalist
Early bird Maxi, RTE presenter and producer wakens up the nation with her successful ninety-minute breakfast show Risin' Time which begins at 5.30am on RTE One.
A former member of the teenage trio, Maxi, Dick and Twink, the radio host represented Ireland twice in the Eurovision: in 1973, with a catchy number called "Do I Dream", and again in Dublin in 1981 with Sheeba and their pop entry "Horoscopes."
MAXI was recently appointed special representative for UNICEF Ireland, and one of her first public engagements was to bring home to us just how serious the situation is on several disaster fronts, particularly in sub-Sahara Africa.
Attending the fifth annual UNICIF international Mother's Day Lunch held in the Dublin's Conrad Hilton Hotel, the RTE star appealed movingly with heart-rending stories of the deprivation and disasters facing the people in Aids-ravaged Zambia, where she spent two weeks, which obviously changed her outlook on life.
Maxi grew up in Dublin's Harold's Cross and presented Late Date for eleven years as well as presenting and producing programmes on 2FM. Her real name is Irene McCoubrey and to pre-empt an oft-asked question: she was nicknamed Maxi in school because of the McC letters in her name.
Her performing talents brought her extensive travel in the USA and Canada, and she enjoyed a spell as a session singer in Motown Studios, Detroit, but her versatility also saw Maxi on duty reporting from the Lebanon, Hawaii, and Madrid.
As well as working with Thames Television on the game show Name That Tune, the strawberry blonde was the first female presenter of Rapid Roulette, a popular RTE rapid-fire quiz show, and has presented both The Lotto and the Miss Ireland Contest.
As an actor, she has performed in Dublin's Abbey Theatre and The Opera House in Cork, and during her singing days was under contract to the Holiday Inn group of hotels in Canada and the US. The multi-talented veteran host also headlined her own shows in such far-flung shores as Miami, Florida and Rhodes, Greece.
As a journalist, her favourite interviewees include: Roger Moore, Bianca Jagger, Paul Young, Gerry Adams, Louis Walsh, Jose Carreras and Gene Pitney.
Maxi's fan base has a long-distance circumference. "We have regular contact from a listener in Alaska who tunes in while herding his cattle," Maxi said. Just shows that if you are good enough, there's no limit to the audience to be grabbed in this new 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year (minimum) new world of ours linked by a stream of satellites and world wide web.
