On leaving Terenure College in 1979 John Kenny moved straight into broadcasting and was part of the thriving Irish Pirate Radio scene in the late 1970’s and 1980’s on Radio City, Big D Radio, South Coast Radio (Cork) ,Capitol Radio and the original Q102.
John got his break into RTE Radio Sport in the Christmas of 1986 and his first broadcast was reporting on the St Patricks Athletic versus Home Farm First Division tie in the National League.
Since then he has broadcast on RTE Radio One, 2FM, Lyric FM, RTE TV ,SKY TV, TG4 and the BBC on a wide range of sport including GAA, Soccer, Cricket, Swimming and Motorsport.
His radio programmes include RTE Radio One’s Saturday Sport which he has presented for the past four years, The Olympic Years, Ireland’s Motorsport Legends and the High Atlas Challenge.
John Kenny’ first visit to Mondello Park was in September 1987 for the Leinster Trophy races where he witnessed a future Formula One world champion, Mika Hakkinen ,win the Formula Opel Euro Series and since then he has presented various TV Motorsport programmes down the years including the Racing Green series for TG4 in 1999, as well as commentary from Mondello and the Phoenix Park Races plus the Kilarney Historic Stages Rally for RTE and SKY TV and the A1GP and MotoGP series for RTE TV.
Since then he has written a book on the Legends of Irish Motorsport, entitled “The Dirty Dozen” which was published by O’Brien Press in October 2007.
John has been the Motorsport Columnist with the Irish Daily Star since 1989.
He has covered two Olympic Games and will be in Beijing for the 2008 Championships. John was only one of three Irish journalists to see every game Ireland played at the Cricket World Cup working for both RTE Radio and TV as well as the prestigious ‘Test Match Special’ for BBC Radio in the Caribbean in 2007 where he commentated to millions world-wide on BBC Radio 4 long wave.
