Jake Meyer
Mountaineer, Presenter and Public Speaker
When Jake was just fourteen years old he set himself the challenge of becoming the youngest person to climb the 7 Summits; the highest mountain on each continent. On the 4th June 2005 he achieved his dream, standing on top of Everest; he became the youngest Briton at just 21 to conquer the world’s highest peak via the difficult North Col route as well as the youngest man in the world to complete the 7 Summits, breaking several climbing records on the way. On Tuesday 1st August 2006, Jake Meyer and his team of six, young British adventurers smashed the existing World Record for climbing the 48 highest peaks of Continental USA in the shortest time possible. Continuing on this theme, in 2009 Jake will attempt to climb the highest mountain in every European country in the fastest time.
Jake is presently attempting to climb K2 - the world's second highest mountain. At 8,611m (28,251ft) is 239m lower than Everest, but presents a much more significant climbing challenge. Nearly 4000 people have summited Everest: only 302 have climbed K2. At least 77 have died on K2's slopes, giving her a 1 in 4 ratio of deaths to summits. This truly is the mountaineer's mountain.
Jake has a degree in Environmental Science from Bristol University. He is enjoying involving his academic interests with his passion for climbing around the world, especially in Venezuela where he became fascinated with the people, the landscape and the wildlife. Studying the environment has been a natural progression after seeing some of the most beautiful and fragile parts of the earth at such a young age. Jake has always been aware of man’s effect on nature having been brought up on an organic farm.
Jake was an Army Scholar and has served four years in the Officer Training Corps (UOTC) at Bristol, and completed his training at RMA Sandhurst as a TA officer in March 2008. This has provided Jake with an excellent range of skills ranging from leadership to teambuilding as well as the obvious survival and combat areas. Jake has a real passion for action and adventure he has shown the ability to organise from an early age; to plan and start his five year mission at the age of fourteen is quite remarkable.
Born on 20th January 1984 in central London, he was educated at Marlborough College and began climbing at 13. Aged 15, he watched the dawn of the new millennium with his father, from his first summit, Kilimanjaro. At 18, he climbed Mount Elbrus in Southern Russia, Europe's highest peak. In 2002, he was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust travelling fellowship to climb Denali, Aconcagua and Kosciusko, the highest peaks in North and South America and Australia respectively. Jake is an Ambassador for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme and has presented Gold Awards at Buckingham Palace. Jake brings his youth and vigour to speaking; his confident and natural style has held the interest of even the toughest business audience. He has been a regular speaker at events like The Times Destinations, Olympia and Birmingham NEC, regular after dinner speaking on board P&O cruise ships, as well as the keynote speaker for senior management events for Royal Bank of Scotland and Deloitte.
