Dusty Gedge
The Juggling Coach and Environmentalist - Accelerated learning through juggling
Juggling is not only fun; it is the perfect way to show how easily behaviours and habits can be changed through good coaching. Dusty Gedge demonstrates how to acquire new skills and coach others effectively in this fun juggling session. · Dusty will kick off a conference or energise an afternoon agenda with his juggling session, teaching up to 500 delegates how to juggle. · The sessions are run with the process of juggling in mind. The most important issue is what happens in between the throw and the catch. · Dusty highlights that it's the fear of failure, which is the biggest block to experimentation and progress. No one wants to drop a ball, yet it's a necessary requirement when learning to juggle. Educating high achievers to take a risk and accept that they may fail, can be a challenge in itself. Its often learning through failure that enables us to progress to the next level. · This method of coaching is unique, and takes between 45 minutes and an hour. The success rate is around 80% and those who do not master the basics, generally go away and master them in their own time. · The juggling session is often the highlight of the day. It can be tailored to the conference theme and delegates can leave with branded juggling balls - a lasting memory of the event.
Environmental expert
Dusty Gedge has been campaigning to get green roofs established on new commercial buildings in London for over 10 years. As an individual with no background in construction, he has been able to challenge some of the perceived barriers to the implementation of sustainable technologies. All too often the attitude has been 'we don’t do this' in the UK. Fundamental to his work has been to change attitudes, habits and cultures that pervade conventional approaches to construction, especially through incorporating vegetation and 'nature' on buildings. Sustainable development requires mental gymnastics and trans-disciplinary approaches to ensure cost effective and 'real' implementation. All too often green technologies can be tokenistic. His was awarded the Andrew Less Memorial Award at the 2004 British Media and Environmental Awards for his work on green buildings which specifically cites 'an individual who demonstrated a reputation for painstaking research and investigation into environmental degradation'. He is co-founder of www.Livngroofs.org, the UK’s independent green roof association, acts as an advisor to various strategic bodies in London including the GLA and London Climate Change Partnership and sits on the European federation of Green Buildings and World Green Roof Network. He is a recognised international speaker at conferences throughout the world and is currently working on 'Building Greener', a new guidance book to be published by CIRIA [Construction Industry Research and Information Association]. Dusty is developing a training programme through THE GREEN ROOF CONSULTANCY in partnership with CIRIA to provide knowledge capacity within the development world. He is currently working on a new Channel Four series that works to provide solutions to the impact of man's footprint on the environment. Dusty’s talk will use the theme of green roofs to demonstrate how perceptions and attitudes need to be challenged and current working practises need to be more inclusive and participatory to deal with the Building Greener and Climate Change, particularly the reuse of waste aggregates, the urban heat island, flood alleviation and the reduction in air conditioning costs. And most importantly, from his perspective BIODIVERSITY - the forgotten issue on the sustainability agenda.
