Craig Sams
Co-Founder and President of Green & Black's

Craig Sams was born on a farm in Nebraska. In 1966, he graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and moved to London, where, in 1967, after importing ethnic fashion (Afghan coats, kaftans, Tibetan bags) and managing rock bands, he and his brother Gregory founded Whole Earth Foods, a leading organic food company, expanding from an organic macrobiotic restaurant into retail, wholesaling and manufacturing, creating Britain’s number 2 peanut butter brand. They published "Seed Magazine - The Journal of Organic Living” from 1972-1977.  
 
In 1991, in partnership with his wife Josephine Fairley, Craig founded Green & Black's Organic Chocolate, the leading organic confectionery brand whose Maya Gold chocolate was the first product to carry the Fairtrade Mark. He is President of Green & Black’s, acquired by Cadbury’s in 2005.
 
He is author of four books: "About Macrobiotics" (1972), The Brown Rice Cookbook (1982, new edition 1992), “The Little Food Book”(2003 – US edition 2004) and “The Story of Green & Black’s” (2008). Sams writes a monthly column in Natural Product News and acted as Chairman of the Soil Association Certification Ltd 2007- May 2009.  He was Treasurer of the Soil Association from 1990-2001 and Chairman from 2001 to 2007.
 
Sams operates Stonelynk Wood, an organic chestnut coppice for biochar as well as a mixed fruit orchard near Hastings, East Sussex, where he also grows organic vegetables and salad crops. He and his wife Jo own Judges Bakery, an organic bakery and grocer in Hastings Old Town, as well as the Wellington Square Centre, a complementary health centre. Craig is co founder and director of Carbon Gold Ltd; a biochar project development and marketing company. He is a director of Duchy Originals Ltd and a director of Slow Food UK Trust.
